'He's a star': Roberto Firmino says Liverpool have an amazing 20-year-old in their ranks

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino has waxed lyrical about Anfield summer signing Fabio Carvalho.

The Brazil international praised his teammate on O Jogo, as transcribed by TEAMtalk.

Liverpool tried to sign Carvalho back in January but they ran out of time to complete the deal on Deadline Day.

However, the Reds maintained their interest in the winger and went on to sign him for £5million plus add-ons.

Carvalho has shown great promise for Liverpool so far, scoring twice in the Premier League.

Admittedly, Jurgen Klopp’s charges have endured a difficult start to the season.

However, Carvalho has adapted quickly to his new surroundings and looks like he could become a great player.

Firmino has already labelled the 20-year-old a “star” and believes he’ll help Liverpool “a lot”.

“He’s a great player,” said the 30-year-old.

“I confess that I had watched some of his games before he came to Liverpool.

“So I was already impressed by the way he played.

“He’s a star, he’s a great player and now he’s also a very close friend.

“We are happy to have him here at Liverpool and I know he will help us a lot, with assists, goals and also his character on the pitch.”

Only one of Carvalho’s seven appearances for Liverpool in all competitions so far has been a start.

However, with a contract running until 2027, he has plenty of time to develop into a top player at Anfield.

“A pure joy to watch”

Jurgen Klopp was over the moon to bring Carvalho to Liverpool.

“Fabio, wow, what a season he played with Fulham,” he told the Reds media team after signing him.

“Getting promoted [with a] football-playing [style], properly football-playing, is not easy.

“So, Marco Silva obviously did an incredible job there, but a big part of that was absolutely Fabio.

“And Harry Wilson obviously, our former [player], and Neco [Williams] of course.

“When we watched him it was a pure joy to watch him, absolutely.

“He can play so many different positions for us, the way we play.

“At the minute he’s not really set on one position.

“It’s the wing, it’s the eight, it’s the 10, it’s the false nine if he grows a few more muscles.

“It’s a short-term and a long-term project.

“He can start tomorrow and he needs to adapt, you can see that a little bit, but when he has the ball that’s proper quality.

“I’m over the moon that he’s here. Fantastic prospect.”
