Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has been described by West Ham boss David Moyes as a “really good player”.

The Reds brought the 25-year-old to Anfield in the January transfer window for a reported £37m initial fee.

Liverpool made their move for Diaz in response to Tottenham’s interest in the Colombia international.

And the winger has hit the ground running at Anfield, getting his first goal against Norwich on 19 February.

Moyes has now revealed that West Ham were also hoping to land Diaz, and the manager spoke to him personally.

The Hammers have been searching for a new attacker for some time.

They have operated with only Michail Antonio as an out-and-out striker since selling Sebastian Haller in 2021.

They were also unable to add Jesse Lingard to their ranks after his successful loan spell last season.

Speaking ahead of West Ham’s meeting with Wolves on Sunday, Moyes spoke of his side’s pursuit of the Liverpool newcomer.

“I spoke to Luis Diaz on the phone, we were quite far down the line to sign him from Porto,” Moyes said.

“My understanding was that Liverpool planned to come in in the summer, so we thought we’d try and get him in January.

“I don’t know if that affected Liverpool’s decision, but he’s a really good player and we didn’t get him.”

Diaz could get his first winner’s medal for the Reds as early as this Sunday.
