‘He’s a leader’: Sky pundit really surprised by how good £13m Newcastle United player has been this season

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp says he’s really surprised by how good Dan Burn has been for Newcastle United this season.

Burn joined the Magpies back in January for a fee worth £13 million (Sky Sports) as he made the switch from Brighton.

The 30-year-old is proving to be an astute signing for Newcastle and has been putting in some solid displays from left-back this season.

The Englishman has moved to full-back following the arrival of Sven Botman over the summer. And Redknapp says he’s been surprised by Burn’s performances.

Redknapp really surprised by Burn

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of today’s clash against Spurs, Redknapp was full of praise for Burn and the rest of the Newcastle defence.

“Certainly Botman has been a really good signing for them,” he said.

“He’s an imposing young man, got really good attributes. [Kieran] Trippier is a brilliant right-back, got great experience.

“The one I guess that surprises is when you look at Dan Burn. You wouldn’t have really thought of him as a left-back because he’s fundamentally a centre-back.

“He did well at Brighton but he’s so adaptable. He’s a really good player, I like what he does. He’s a leader and they just look really strong.

“[Fabian] Schar’s done well, I think you’ve got to give Eddie Howe so much credit for the way that they’ve lined up as a defence. That takes a lot of organisation but they’ve done ever so well.”

The Magpies travelled to north London today and were aiming to keep up their brilliant run of form.

Howe’s men put in a superb display in the first-half as they look a 2-0 lead into half-time. Callum Wilson latched onto a mistake by Hugo Lloris and chipped the ball over Dier brilliantly.

Miguel Almiron doubled Newcastle’s lead after a poor pass from Lloris was intercepted. But the Paraguayan had it all to do and skipped past Clement Lenglet before producing a magnificent finish from a tight angle.

Spurs did get back into the game as Harry Kane scored a real poacher’s effort just moments after Newcastle felt they should have been awarded a penalty.

But Howe’s men held on to secure a massive three points in north London and Burn put in another solid display from left-back.
