Hertha Berlin issue £34.5m Matheus Cunha transfer demand amid Leeds United interest
According to Bild, Hertha Berlin will green light a summer transfer for Matheus Cunha amid interest from Leeds United.
The Elland Road outfit are one of several potential destinations for Cunha, after Marcelo Bielsa’s side expressed their interest. But the striker has suitors from around Europe with Napoli, Monaco and Atalanta also keen.
All four have informed Hertha of their interest in the 22-year-old, who is recovering from an ankle injury. Cunha is back in Brazil receiving treatment for the issue and hopes to be fit in time for the Olympics.
Cunha returning to fitness will be a boost for Hertha’s new Director of Football Fredi Bobic. The former Eintracht Frankfurt chief is striving to better position the Berlin outfit ahead of the next Bundesliga season.
Hertha lack a prolific striker with Krzysztof Piatek, Jhon Cordoba, Jessic Ngankam and Davie Selke not viewed as the answer. Cunha could be, but Bobic is prepared to sell amid Leeds’ interest and use those funds to find the one.
Bobic is free to negotiate a fee for Cunha as there is no release clause in the Brazilian’s contract. He penned a one-year extension earlier this month to run through to 2025.
The fee is the only condition Bobic needs to grant a move with a €40million (£34.5m) valuation set. Further interest could also build should Cunha have a good tournament at the Olympics to improve Hertha’s position.
TBR’s view: Leeds won’t pay big for Cunha
Cunha is a very promising striker who showed exciting flashes this season and, at 22, could develop well under Bielsa. But Leeds paying big for a transfer this summer must be questioned.
The Brazilian burst out of the blocks with six goals and three assists in his first 10 Bundesliga appearances. However, he would only score once more in his subsequent 17 league outings this term and offer three assists.
Injuries were occasionally a problem, as well, with Cunha sidelined with groin and hamstring issues before his current ankle injury. He also received five yellow cards in his first 10 games and received four more cautions following a one-game ban.
It was not through a lack of chances that Cunha only scored once since November, either. He started 25 of his 27 appearances this season and would be a big gamble at £34.5m.
