Hertha Berlin awaiting decision from Liverpool on Marko Grujic

The Hertha Berlin sporting director has told German newspaper Kicker that he is keeping a careful eye on Liverpool and their decision over Marko Grujic.

The Serbian maestro was Jurgen Klopp’s first signing when he arrived at Anfield in 2016 but has spent the last two seasons on loan with the Bundesliga outfit.

It could be that Liverpool are unwilling to loan out Grujic again this season, with a permanent deal preferred by the Premier League champions.

Michael Preetz says he is monitoring the situation and is keen to discover what Liverpool’s plans are for the player next season.

He told Kicker: “Grujic is a player who spent two years with us on loan. He has been back with Liverpool for a few days during pre-season.

“Unlike last year, it was Liverpool’s declared with that Marko should take part in the preparation there.

“There is certainly a decision to made in England and Marko’s immediate future: Will he be loaned out again? Is he for sale? Will he be part of the team?

“That cannot be foreseen at the moment.”

At 24, Grujic won’t be short of potential suitors but it’s quite simply not worked out for him at Liverpool since his switch from Red Star Belgrade.

Fresh start

During his two seasons away from the club on loan, he has done reasonably well in the Bundesliga and that might be the best destination for him.

He has played 51 games across his two stints in Germany and has showcased his midfield talents exceptionally well.

His days at Liverpool do look to be numbered and his training with the team will probably be nothing more than an exercise to keep him in shape ahead of his next move.

It is thought the Reds want to recoup £20 million for his services and it remains to be seen if a third move to Berlin will be on the horizon.
