'Here we go': Fabrizio Romano says reported Liverpool midfield target is now joining Chelsea
Liverpool have reportedly been keeping tabs on Vasco da Gama talent Andrey Santos.
Earlier this week, The Times reported that the Reds were monitoring the 18-year-old midfielder.
Liverpool were one of several Premier League sides eyeing Santos, alongside Manchester City and Newcastle United.
The Reds not only have an ageing midfield, but several of those players are out of contract at Anfield in the summer.
Therefore, Liverpool really could do with bringing in some reinforcements in the middle of the park.
Santos, as one of Brazil’s best young midfield talents, seemed like a good shout for the Reds.
However, the Anfield outfit has all-but missed out on him now, with Chelsea seemingly winning the race.
On Wednesday, multiple reports emerged claiming the Blues were closing in on a deal.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has declared “here we go” on Santos to Chelsea, in a huge blow for Liverpool and the others.
Disappointing news but Liverpool need different players – TBR View
While it’s a shame that Liverpool have missed out on this top talent, they arguably have different priorities.
The Reds could do with bringing in midfielders who are first-team ready, or at least won’t take too long to get up to speed.
Santos is still a teenager and doesn’t have much first-team experience at Vasco. He’s more of an exciting prospect with a very high ceiling.
Liverpool’s two main reported midfield targets – Sofyan Amrabat and Jude Bellingham – make more sense.
The former has plenty of experience at the highest level and should be fairly attainable in January.
And the latter is one of the best midfielders in world football, already boasting considerable experience despite his age.
Bellingham will likely cost quite a fair bit, while Borussia Dortmund won’t want to lose him mid-season. So he’s likely to be a marquee summer signing.
