Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s comments throw long-term Arsenal future into doubt

Arsenal’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan has theorised that he didn’t fit the Premier League, after leaving the club on loan to join AS Roma.

The Armenia international completed a deadline day switch to the Italian club, just a day after featuring for the Gunners against Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby.

Mkhitaryan will spend the season at the Stadio Olimpico, where he will hope to return to being the player he was for Borussia Dortmund.

The star has struggled in English football, first at Manchester United and then at Arsenal after joining as part of a swap deal involving Alexis Sanchez.

Reflecting honestly, Mkhitaryan said in a press conference (Sky Sports): “I think maybe I wasn’t fitting to English football and I though ‘OK, maybe it’s time to change something and to try some new league.

“At the end of the day you want to be satisfied playing yourself. It doesn’t matter where you play – you have to get pleasure from what you do. The last month at Arsenal I wasn’t getting pleasure.”

Mkhitaryan is expected to make his Roma debut against Sassuolo on Sunday.

TBR’s view

If the 30-year-old’s long-term future wasn’t already in doubt at Arsenal, it surely is now.

Unfortunately it does seem like the English game doesn’t suit the attacker.

He has shown glimpses for Arsenal but is very inconsistent and is easily pushed off the ball.

Serie A is slower and more tactical, and it could be the environment for Mkhitaryan to flourish.
