Henri Lansbury’s last chance at Aston Villa may have just passed him by

Aston Villa played out an exciting 4-2 win over their local rivals Birmingham City yesterday in a game that will likely always be remembered for ‘that’ Alan Hutton goal.

It was also a big game for Henri Lansbury. The 28-year-old has had a horrid season with Aston Villa. He had featured just once before this game, in the EFL Cup loss to Burton Albion.

But, his run of zero appearances in the Championship finally came to an end yesterday. Lansbury was brought into the fold after 69 minutes, replacing Glenn Whelan in the heart of Aston Villa’s midfield.

It was no doubt a big moment for the 28-year-old, whose last Championship fixture was against Millwall in May.

Less than 10 minutes later and his day was over. Lansbury pulled a hamstring and limped from the field, replaced by Ahmed Elmohamady.

It was a bitter blow for the player, whose Aston Villa career has not gone as planned.

Steve Bruce signed Lansbury from Nottingham Forest in January 2017 for a fee in the region of £3 million. He is reportedly on £40,000-a-week at the club, so it would make sense for new boss Dean Smith to try and squeeze some life out of him.

But with another setback now looking likely and January just around the corner, it appears Lansbury’s last chance at Villa Park may have just passed him by.
