Helder Costa shows why he should be a starter with two assist performance in EFL Cup

Leeds United defeated Salford City in the EFL Cup last night in comfortable fashion. The Whites dominated proceedings against their League Two opposition and eventually ran out 3-0 winners. A debut goal from Eddie Nketiah, a rare one from Gaetano Berardi and Mateusz Klich’s fine effort secured safe passage to the second round, where Leeds will face Stoke City.

But the star of the night was perhaps Helder Costa.

The summer signing from Wolves was handed his first competitive start for Leeds at the Peninsula Stadium and did not disappoint.

Costa delivered a deadly cross for Nketiah to open the scoring whilst it was his corner that was masterfully turned in by Swiss defender Berardi.

The two assists were a quick glimpse as to why, eventually, Costa has to be starting for Leeds United.

Signed in the summer on loan which reportedly, according to The Mirror, will become permanent for £15 million next summer, Costa was Leeds’ most eye-catching recruit ahead of the new season.

However, so far, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has not unleashed him from the start in the Championship. But based on this display, it is surely only a matter of time before he can either usurp Jack Harrison on the left or force Pablo Hernandez inside from the right.
