Liverpool have pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in Champions League history. Two goals apiece from unlikely sources Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum secured the 4-0 win they needed for a 4-3 aggregate success.
It is a performance and display that has all the football world united in respect for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.
Want the proof? Even Jose Mourinho has been gushing over Liverpool. The Portuguese former Manchester United and Chelsea boss is not popular at Anfield. However, as a pundit on beIN Sports, he gave a glowing appraisal of Klopp’s work on Merseyside.
“This remontada (comeback) has one name, Jurgen. This is not about tactics, this is not about philosophy. This is about heart and soul and a fantastic empathy that he creates with that group of players.
“They had the risk of finishing a fantastic season without nothing (sic) to celebrate. Now they are one step from being European champions.
“I think Jurgen deserves (it).”
If a performance is so gutsy, so determined, so breath-taking it brings a smile out of Mourinho, it deserves an abundance of credit.
In a way, the bond Klopp shares with his Liverpool players is comparable to the one Mourinho had with his first Chelsea crop – even if it does not have the siege mentality Mourinho gathered.
Instead, Klopp has a brotherhood at Anfield that is capable of going above and beyond when the time comes.
Tonight clearly proved that.
