'Heading in the right direction': Sky Sports journalist suggests Arsenal are getting closer to making signing
Arsenal remain in pursuit of a new midfielder as the January transfer window edges into its last 10 days.
The Gunners have had a nightmare January as far as their midfield is concerned.
Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny have been at the Africa Cup of Nations, with the latter still away.
Partey came back after Ghana’s early elimination, but his return to action for Arsenal didn’t go to plan.
He came on against Liverpool 15 minutes to go but picked up two yellow cards in three minutes and got sent off.
Partey will now miss Arsenal’s next Premier League match, against Burnley this weekend.
Granit Xhaka is also suspended, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles is on loan at Roma.
Therefore, a new central midfielder is a top priority for Mikel Arteta.
However, it looks as though Arsenal are closing in on Juventus ace Arthur Melo.
The Brazilian’s agent reportedly held talks with Arsenal director Edu at London Colney on Wednesday.
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol provided an update on Thursday afternoon (20/1/22, 17:19).
“The Arthur Melo deal to Arsenal is heading in the right direction, the issue at the moment is Juventus.
“The player’s agent was in London yesterday for talks with Arsenal and I think those talks went pretty well.
“Arsenal want to take the player on loan and Juventus are willing for that to happen.
“Discussions at the moment on the length of the loan.”
Tuttomercatoweb‘s Enzo Bucchioni provided a similar update on Friday afternoon.
“Juventus are dealing with Arthur, who wants to go to Arsenal,” he wrote.
“The meeting between his agent and the English club went well.
“In the Premier League, he’d have more space, and Juve would be offloading a high-wage player.
“Juve would willingly swap Arthur with Partey.”
