Cristian Romero is probably having his best season at Tottenham to date.
The Argentine has been utterly brilliant this term, and he scored yet another goal at the weekend.
The centre-back has been a commanding presence at the back, and he looks to be revitalised under Ange Postecoglou.
However, in another world, Romero could easily have left the club last summer.
Indeed, speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing Romero’s situation last season, and he says that he got the feeling at some point last term that Romero was headed towards an exit and that he was distinctly unhappy under Antonio Conte.

Cristian Romero wasn’t happy
Gold spoke about the £42m man.
“I loved what that goal meant for him, the passion. We spoke about Conte earlier and the way the team was. I felt that Romero was potentially heading towards an exit at some point. I feel like he wasn’t happy at the club. This guy is a World Cup winner and I felt like there was a feeling there of ‘I could be doing better than this.’ This is very much me putting thoughts in his head that may not have been there, But it’s a complete contrast this year,” Gold said.
Couldn’t blame him
We absolutely wouldn’t blame Romero if this was how he was feeling under Antonio Conte.
It’s a long time ago now, but we mustn’t forget just how miserable a club Tottenham Hotspur were under the Italian at times last season.
The football was drab, the results were poor and the atmosphere was terrible.
For a player like Romero with big ambitions, it must’ve been painful, but now, everything has changed and he seems happier than ever.
Let’s hope that Romero can continue moving in the right direction under Ange Postecoglou.
