'He was sincere': Villarreal star shares what Emery told his squad before rejecting Newcastle
Newcastle United have appointed Eddie Howe as their new manager but it is no secret that Villarreal boss Unai Emery was their preferred option.
The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park in recent weeks. A move even looked imminent at one point, but Emery decided against it at the last moment, and he publicly made it clear that he wasn’t returning to the Premier League.
That is a blow for Newcastle as the ex-Arsenal man is a brilliant manager. However, the Magpies’ loss is Villarreal’s gain and they are absolutely delighted with the Spaniard’s decision.
Villarreal midfielder Manu Trigueros was asked about the uncertainty the players felt while the rumours were floating around. Here’s what he said…
Trigueros: Emery was sincere with us amid Newcastle links
The Spanish midfielder told Marca: “In good times and bad he (Emery) is calm, he gives us a lot of confidence, he encourages us a lot and when there is a bad moment he keeps calm.”
Asked about the rumours linking Emery to Newcastle: “That also reached us. We were waiting to see what would happen.
“Emery told us that there was no offer and that he would stay. He was sincere with us and has stayed at Villarreal to achieve the objectives.”
Emery made it clear in his statement that Villarreal is his home and he’s committed to staying there. He labelled all the rumours in England as ‘noise from another country’. He thanked the ‘great club’ (Newcastle) for their interest, before reiterating his loyalty to the Yellow Submarine.
If loyalty really is the reason why he snubbed Newcastle, there’s not much one can say to criticise him. However, rumours did make us believe that his head was turned for a bit at the opportunity presented to him.
Newcastle fans have already moved on and all eyes are on Howe. The Englishman is a fantastic manager in his own right and with a bit of luck on his side, he could really transform the Magpies in the coming months.
