‘He struggles’… Tim Sherwood says £39m Tottenham player looks so dodgy when he has to defend

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the most exciting teams in the Premier League.

The north London club come into every game looking to attack, and while that is exciting to watch, that can leave them exposed at the back sometimes.

Indeed, defence isn’t the order of the day at Tottenham, and that shows in how they line-up and how they play.

One of Spurs’ most progressive players at the moment is Pedro Porro, the Spaniard is always trying to make things happen going forwards, but, at the same time, we mustn’t forget that he is a right-back.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Tim Sherwood has been discussing Porro, and while he says he’s been outstanding in this current system, he did note how much he struggles in a defensive sense at times.

Porro struggles defensively

Sherwood shared his verdict on the £39m man.

“I think Van de Ven is huge for them, he’s very quick and they want to play on the halfway line and he has that turn of pace when to go and sweep everything up. I was very critical of Pedro Porro, but he’s been outstanding in this formation, he’s a winger, he plays inverted, but when you ask him to defend he struggles a little bit, but the manager doesn’t want him to do that side of it,” Sherwood said.

Strike a balance

As much as we like Porro as a player and his style at the moment, a balance does need to be struck here.

Indeed, while it’s exciting to watch a full-back operate in this way, this style may not be sustainable if Spurs want to reach the next level and become a force in terms of winning major silverware.

Porro needs to brush up his game in a defensive sense, and luckily, at the age of just 23, he has plenty of time to learn and perfect the art of defending at Tottenham.
