BBC Sport pundit Michael Brown has criticised Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty for his late challenge on Everton’s Dwight McNeil on Saturday.

Spurs hosted the Toffees at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday, hoping to make it three wins in a row in all competitions.

Tottenham asked most of the questions in the opening exchanges of the game, though it proved a bit of a stalemate at first.

Neither Spurs nor Everton could break the deadlock by half time, though there were a couple of decent chances.

Tottenham ended up opening the scoring just before the hour mark, Harry Kane converting a penalty he won himself.

In the 74th minute, McNeil won the ball in the air and was caught by Doherty afterwards.

The referee stopped play quickly to make sure the Everton player was fine, and he was able to continue.

Nonetheless, Brown didn’t like what he saw from Doherty.

“Doherty is too late, he shouldn’t even go in for that challenge,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live (15/10, 19:04).

“He’s late. McNeil is lucky it wasn’t worse than that.”

Nothing came of it in the end – the £15million Spurs defender wasn’t punished, while McNeil seemed fine.

Tottenham went on to put the game out of Everton’s reach with a second goal, five minutes from time.

Rodrigo Bentancur whipped in a delivery from the right to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who had a go at goal.

The ball took a deflection off Alex Iwobi that took it out of Jordan Pickford’s reach.
