Arsenal legend Tony Adams has welcomed Takehiro Tomiyasu’s return to action off the bench against Manchester United.

The Highbury icon, speaking on Premier League Productions, said Cedric Soares “scares the life out of” him.

Adams also feels the Gunners can go on to get fourth in the Premier League with the help of Tomiyasu.

Tomiyasu has been one of the signings of the summer for any Premier League club this year.

The 23-year-old cost Arsenal just £17million from Bologna and quickly made himself a regular starter under Mikel Arteta.

However, Tomiyasu only played twice for the Gunners this year prior to Saturday, a calf injury keeping him on the sidelines.

Cedric has been deputising for him, and while he has put in some great displays, he has flattered to deceive at times.

After his poor performance against Southampton, Arteta opted to name Ben White at right-back against Chelsea.

On Saturday, Cedric returned to the XI, but he struggled in the first half, though he improved after the interval.

Tomiyasu replaced the Portuguese in the latter stages of the game, and Adams loved what he saw.

“It could be a north London shootout now,’ Adams said on Premier League Production (via Metro) in reference to the top-four race.

“Spurs have got Liverpool away and Arsenal coming up, those are going to be the two pivotal games I think in the top-four race.

“It’s been a great comeback for Arsenal after those three defeats. We’ve had a few injuries too.

“Tomi came back right at the end there which is great because I’m still scared about Cedric.

“He scares the life out of me so it’s good to see Tomi back in action.

“If we can get him back and get solid defensively, I think we’ve got fourth.”
