'He is that good': Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have a young talent in their ranks who's just 'fantastic'
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has tipped Ibrahima Konate to become Virgil van Dijk’s first-choice centre-back partner in the Reds XI.
The Anfield icon and Sky Sports pundit lauded the 22-year-old on the latest episode of the It’s a Funny Old Life podcast.
Konate has enjoyed a superb maiden season for Liverpool following his arrival from RB Leipzig last summer.
Jurgen Klopp initially used the Frenchman sparingly over the course of the campaign.
But now, Konate is featuring regularly in the Champions League and FA Cup, and doing an amazing job.
He is yet to lose any of the 23 games he has featured in for Liverpool this term.
And aside from impressing defensively, Konate has also contributed on the goal front.
He scored in three successive matches earlier this month, showcasing his aerial and heading abilities.
“He may just edge Matip”
Carragher thinks Konate has been so good that he fears for Matip’s starting spot alongside Van Dijk next term.
“He’s great isn’t he,” he said on the It’s a Funny Old Life podcast.
“Joe Gomez is having a very hard time getting back into the team and is playing right-back at the moment.
“But the three now, wow. I think Konate, next season, might become the first-choice to partner Virgil van Dijk.
“He may just edge Matip, not that Matip has done anything wrong.
“I just think Konate is that young and he is that good that you have to just go and let him play.
“He’s getting a lot of games now, but he is fantastic.”
Van Dijk and Matip are both 30, so it’s important for Klopp to keep an eye out on successors.
In Konate, he already has one – at just 22, he’s already shining in the Premier League and Champions League.
It’ll be exciting to see just how much Konate can develop over the coming years and how great he’ll be when he hits his peak.
