'He is insane', 'a joke': £15m attacker suggests Tottenham have sold one of England's best prospects
Tottenham Hotspur used to have an incredibly talented player on their books called Marcus Edwards.
The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Spurs after joining the club as an eight-year-old.
Mauricio Pochettino compared Edwards to Lionel Messi due to his low centre of gravity and ability to beat a man.
However, he ended up making just one first-team appearance for Tottenham.
Following spells on loan at Norwich and Excelsior, Edwards left Spurs for Portugal’s Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2019.
After 96 appearances, 20 goals and 16 assists for Vitoria, he joined Sporting Lisbon in the January transfer window.
“I haven’t seen anyone better than him with my own eyes”
Montpellier forward Stephy Mavididi played alongside the former Tottenham man in the England youth ranks.
LiveScore asked Mavididi who Gareth Southgate should be watching for the future.
“Marcus Edwards,” replied the £15m-rated ace. “He is insane.
“Every time someone asks me about this guy, for me, he is one of the top three players I have played with.
“Dribbling, agility, low center of gravity, his change of direction.
“I haven’t seen anyone better than him with my own eyes. The guy is a joke, in the pockets and on the turn.
“He’s in Portugal right now. Last year I think he got seven or eight goals and a couple of assists.
“The year before that he was doing the same and this year he is also looking strong and on for the same numbers.
“He has proven that he can do it and play at a high level. I knew that already myself, but it is up to the world to see that.”
It was previously reported that Tottenham would be owed 50 percent of any fee that Sporting pay to Vitoria for the 23-year-old.
However, Record – via Sport Witness and The Spurs Web – have claimed that Sporting only bought 50 percent of Edwards’ rights.
They reportedly paid €7.6m (£6.3m) to Vitoria with the remaining 50 percent set to still belong to Tottenham.
