'He has the quality': Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool have a top talent in their ranks
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has waxed lyrical about Reds teammate Curtis Jones in wake of his incredible progress this season.
The 20-year-old midfielder has risen through the ranks at Anfield and has come such a long way in the last couple of years.
In early 2018, Jones signed his first professional contract at Liverpool and made his Reds Under-23s debut.
Three-and-a-half years on, and the midfielder has a half-century of appearances for his boyhood club.
Jones also has the accolade of being Liverpool’s youngest ever captain in a game, a contract until 2025, and six England Under-21 caps.
He delivered arguably his best Reds performance last week, playing a part in all five of the visitors’ goals in the Champions League win at Porto.
Van Dijk believes Jones’ challenge now is to be consistent with that level of performance, but feels he has what it takes to make that happen.
Asked how impressed he has been with Jones’ development, the centre-half told the Liverpool media team: “A lot.
“Obviously in the last couple of games he’s shown that he has the quality to be there and is doing well.
“He’s still young, he’s still learning, he has a great mentality.
“He has to keep that going. It’s only the start for him and he has to keep showing it.
“The most difficult part of being a football player is being consistent, so that’s going to be a big challenge for him. But so far, so good.”
