‘He has done brilliantly’: BBC pundit thinks Arsenal have a truly ‘outstanding’ 23-year-old in their ranks

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been an “outstanding signing” for the Gunners, says BBC Sport pundit Clinton Morrison.

The north Londoners signed the 23-year-old from Sheffield United last summer for a fee that could reportedly rise to £30million.

At the time, Arsenal fan reaction was mixed at best.

Some questioned his credentials in wake of back-to-back relegations with Bournemouth and the Blades.

Others, meanwhile, wondered whether £30million on an apparent back-up goalkeeper was worth it.

However, it didn’t take Ramsdale long to not only become first-choice, but to become a key player and fan favourite.

Indeed, the goalkeeper won Arsenal’s Player of the Month award for October and November.

And on Thursday night, Ramsdale was once again superb as the Gunners ran out 1-0 winners over Wolves.

He made some great saves, was quick off his line when he needed to be, and was a calming presence in a dramatic second half.

Gabriel Martinelli was controversially sent off in the 69th minute, but Ramsdale wasn’t fazed with his team a man down.

“He has done brilliantly, Ramsdale,” Morrison said on BBC Radio 5 Live (10/2/22, 9:21pm).

“When you are down to 10 men, you want your goalkeeper to come for crosses.

“He has been brilliant, he has been an outstanding signing, he has been a brilliant goalkeeper for Arsenal since he has gone there.”

“I realised he had a special personality”

Not only is Ramsdale an impressive goalkeeper, but his force of personality is also noticeable.

Back in December, Arsenal media team asked Arteta when he realised just how big a character Ramsdale would be.

“The day I spoke with him for the first time on the phone!” the manager said.

“That is when I realised he had a special personality and was going to fit in really well with what we are trying to do, and the way we want our players to behave.”

In Ramsdale, Arsenal have a goalkeeper with amazing talent, the right attitude, and who’s still got so many years ahead of him.
