Gabby Agbonlahor says 24-year-old Arsenal player ‘didn’t do much’ last night despite 6-0 win

Gabby Agbonlahor has issued an interesting verdict on the performance of Kai Havertz after the 24-year-old opened the scoring for Arsenal in their Champions League victory over Lens on Wednesday.

Agbonlahor was speaking on talkSPORT (broadcast on 30/11; 6:24) as he suggested that the attacking midfielder actually did little during the 6-0 win which saw Arsenal guarantee top spot in their group.

Fans hoping Kai Havertz has turned a corner at Arsenal will have been delighted to see him score on Wednesday night. Of course, the former Chelsea man bagged the late winner against Brentford at the weekend.

Gabby Agbonlahor not impressed by Kai Havertz in Arsenal win

He now has two in two. And he appears to have discovered some confidence after a difficult start to life at Arsenal for Havertz. Certainly, some of his touches suggested he is ready to put his struggles behind him.

Whoscored shows that he made two key passes and won three tackles during the game.

However, it would appear that not everyone was convinced that Havertz was that impressive against the Ligue 1 side. Alan Brazil suggested that Havertz deserves some praise for his recent form. But Gabby Agbonlahor was not convinced.

“I wasn’t a big fan but he’s a German international, so you’ve got to give him that,” Brazil told talkSPORT.

“Alan, he didn’t do much last night though. His goal was a tap-in, he didn’t do much last night,” Agbonlahor replied.

“I’m not having that he’s a midfield player, no chance. He’s either a forward or he’s not,” Brazil added.

“That’s two goals now so hopefully you’ll see him get better because Arsenal need him.”

Mikel Arteta doesn’t need to rush summer signing

In truth, most Arsenal fans will completely disagree with Agbonlahor’s view on Havertz’s performance. He looked a different player to the one who really struggled to find a spot in the side in the early weeks of the campaign.

Mikel Arteta will be grateful that he does not need to rush Havertz. His teammates are doing so well right now – without even hitting their top gear – so the onus is not on the German to make a massive impact week-in, week-out right now.

Ideally, he would be able to steal the show more often. But Arteta can just keep doing what he is doing with Havertz right now – because it appears to be working.
