‘He cannot’: Rafa Benitez thinks 25-year-old Tottenham man won’t make a ‘difference’ to Antonio Conte’s side this season

Former Everton boss Rafael Benitez has told Sky Sports News that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison won’t be able to make a ‘difference’ to Antonio Conte’s side this season.

Richarlison made the switch from Goodison Park to Spurs this summer and has forced his way into Conte’s side already.

The 25-year-old faces stiff competition at Tottenham with the likes of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski at the club.

And it’s for this reason that Richarlison’s former boss Benitez thinks he will not make a huge impact at Spurs.

Benitez thinks Richarlison won’t make a ‘difference’

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Benitez was asked if Richarlison can make a difference for Spurs under Conte

“I will give you the answer but you will have to analyse the answer. No. Why? Because they have so many good players, he cannot make a difference,” Benitez said.

“But, he will be a key player for them. I see the highlights and the goals he scored [against Marseille]. He’s a very good player and a nice lad that you need to know how to manage.

“But he has very good players there, so he has to compete against them. So, it’s not that he will make the difference.

“He could be the difference at Everton because he was one of the most important players but at Tottenham he will be one important player. But not the one that will make the difference.

“When I said no, I didn’t want to say no in a negative way. I said no because they are so strong. They have [Heung-Min] Son, Harry Kane up-front. You have [Dejan] Kulusevski now, Lucas [Moura], they have good players.

“At the end, he will be one of these good players.”

Benitez managed Richarlison during his short spell at Goodison Park last season, before he was dismissed in January.

There’s no denying that the Brazilian faces an uphill battle to nail down a permanent place in Conte’s squad due to the attacking trio of Son, Kane and Kulusevski.

But Richarlison has certainly made a big impact so far and has started in four consecutive games for Spurs.

His brace against Marseille in the Champions League shows just how important he could become for Conte.

The former Toffees man was brought in to provide the Italian with a quality alternative to his current front-three.

Richarlison is certainly doing this so far and will only continue to improve as he adjusts to playing with his new teammates.
