'He can play': Rio Ferdinand thinks 25-year-old Arsenal star's in with a real chance of going to the World Cup now

Arsenal defender Ben White’s chance of the going to the World Cup may have improved last night.

Chelsea defender Reece James limped off during his side’s win over AC Milan, and was the latest England defender to pick up an injury.

Speaking on BT Sport Champions League Tonight (11/10 10:03pm), pundit Rio Ferdinand thinks this might be good news for White.

The 25-year-old Arsenal defender was omitted from Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad.

With the World Cup just a month away, it’s not a good sign for the former Brighton defender.

However, Reece James has become the third England full-back in a week to pick up an injury.

Manchester City’s Kyle Walker had groin surgery that has put his World Cup in doubt.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s season went from bad to worse after going off with an injury against Arsenal at the weekend.

Liverpool later confirmed that he would unavailable for several weeks.

All of this might be good news for White, who now has a chance to go to the World Cup, according to Ferdinand.

White now has World Cup chance

Ferdinand addressed England right-back conundrum after yesterday’s Champions League ties. “I think the biggest beneficiary of this situation if it doesn’t work out for these right-backs is Ben White.

“He can play right-sided centre-back in a three, he’s proven now he can play right-back at Arsenal and get forward.

“So, I think he’ll the one who will come out of this rubbing his hands really.

“If Gareth (Southgate), wants to play with a wing-back who gets up and marauds and gets on the ball, then I don’t think he’d look to Ben White.

“He might look to an attacking winger instead.

“I don’t see him going to a back-four, he hasn’t shown us he’s going to do that, so I don’t see that happening.

“But, as a right-sided centre-back, now the injuries are piling up, he would slot in there.”

White has enjoyed a fantastic season for Arsenal, and has made the right-back position his own.

Kevin Campbell believes Arteta is encouraging White to be more attacking in this role, which would suit England.

However, Gary Neville has suggested England would ‘lose something’ if White was played on the right.

White’s versatility – he can also play at centre-back or as a holding midfielder – might appeal to Southgate.

Despite only having four caps so far, White now has a chance to go to the World Cup.

His form is certainly asking Southgate some questions, and now injuries could be in his favour as well.
