Having missed out on Ings, Tottenham fans want another PL striker - situation might have just changed
Danny Ings was repeatedly reported as a Tottenham target this summer. As the drama surrounding Harry Kane continues to rumble on, Spurs need a replacement – and they need a striker even if Kane stays. Ings has joined Aston Villa, though, and Tottenham fans have suggested another option.
Ings, 29, moves to Villa after scoring 46 goals in 100 appearances for Southampton. The three-time England international had entered the final 12 months of his contract with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. It is a move that sees Villa spend big once again, and Southampton get plenty of money in.
TalkSPORT, among many other outlets, claim that Ings has joined Villa for a fee of £30million despite his age and contract status. It gives Villa plenty of fire power up top along with Ollie Watkins – while Tottenham and others miss out, to the frustration of their fans. But could it open up a move?
With Villa now boasting England international Watkins and Ings, there is likely to only be space for one player in the starting line-up. Yes, Ings is renowned for his injuries – but surely Smith cannot rotate the two strikers? It might see Villa open up the opportunity of selling Watkins this summer.
What will Watkins be feeling as Villa sign Tottenham target Ings?
The ex-Brentford man was excellent in the Premier League last season – scoring 14 goals. That form saw him called up to the England side and he scored on his debut for the Three Lions. But in the midst of Jack Grealish moving to Manchester City, he might have lost his place in the side.
It is harsh on Watkins. While he can play out wide, he was a pretty standard Championship player as a winger at Brentford. It was only until he was moved into the middle as a striker that Villa decided to splash £33million on the striker – a fee which saw Villa pay an initial £28million (Athletic).
Even if he was okay with reverting to playing out wide, Watkins might find he has little chance of starting. That is, even if Jack Grealish leaves. Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia have come in, while Bertrand Traore and Anwar El Ghazi were excellent at times last season. Watkins could drop to the bench.
Could Tottenham save the day for Watkins – and what are fans saying?
Across to Tottenham, now. Without Ings, they are left with just Kane up top. But the England skipper has pretty much gone AWOL, failing to report for training this week. Whether that is because he is on strike, or because he is in quarantine, or because he is in Miami – remains to be seen.
What is fact, is that Tottenham need a striker – whether Kane stays or goes. They need a striker to replace Carlos Vinicius who has returned to Benfica after a disappointing loan. But a replacement could be given the chance to lead the line. It is a tempting scenario for, potentially, Watkins.
While he would get more game time at Tottenham as back-up to Kane, as he would at Villa as back-up to Ings – due to European football – Watkins has more chance of starting for Spurs. That is down to Kane’s future. For those reasons, Tottenham fans have urged their club to sign Villa ace Watkins.
