Tottenham Hotspur performed something of a U-turn this week, by bringing Michel Vorm back to the club. The Dutchman was released in the summer as his contract with the club expired.
However, after Hugo Lloris suffered a dislocated elbow ruling him out until 2020, Tottenham decided to bring Vorm back on a deal until the end of the season.
It certainly looks a no-brainer. Vorm is an experienced international goalkeeper who can provide able competition and cover for Paulo Gazzaniga.
However, it does send a message to talented young Tottenham stopper Alfie Whiteman. That message, quite simply, is that he is not yet trusted in the first-team.

Which is fair enough from Tottenham’s point of view.
Whiteman is just 21-years-old and has yet to make his professional debut. Tottenham, as yet, have not sent the former England under-19 stopper out on a loan spell, so trusting him as the back-up between the sticks would have been a huge leap of faith from Mauricio Pochettino.
However, it surely can’t do the confidence of the young stopper any good. With the likes of Brandon Austin, Jonathan De Bie and Joshua Oluwayemi all available to the Tottenham under-23 system, Whiteman now finds himself stuck in limbo.
In January, a loan move must be the right step for his development, if he is not yet trusted at first-team level.
