‘Have to admit that’: Merson explains why Newcastle are in ‘major trouble’ despite the takeover

Paul Merson believes Newcastle United are in ‘major trouble’ despite the fact that they are now backed by wealthy, ambitious owners.

The Magpies’ new era kicked off in brilliant style last weekend as Callum Wilson opened the scoring against Tottenham in under two minutes. St James’ Park erupted and it really did look like a fairy-tale story.

However, Spurs bounced back and dominated the game. They picked up a deserved 3-2 win and that pushed Steve Bruce out of the door.

It is extremely unlikely that Newcastle will have a new manager by tomorrow. That is one of the reasons why Merson believes Crystal Palace will pick up a comfortable victory at Selhurst Park.

Paul Merson: Newcastle United are in major trouble

“I like the way Crystal Palace are playing under Patrick Vieira, he’s got them playing on the front foot. They’ve been incredibly unlucky with a few last-gasp equalizers, but overall, I think they’ve performed well in the Premier League after a slow start.

“Despite the positive news about Newcastle United’s takeover, you have to admit that they are in major trouble. They could be in a relegation battle and their fixture list doesn’t look too kind, so these are worrying times for them.

“Steve Bruce is gone and they are yet to announce his replacement, so I fancy Palace to take advantage of the situation and secure three points in this one.”

It is an exciting time for Newcastle United but that excitement will turn into a nightmare if they get relegated this season.

The Magpies, who are yet to win a single game in the Premier League this season, are currently 19th in the table. The risk of relegation is massive at the moment, which is why they need to get the next manager right.

If Bruce’s replacement fails to turn things around in his first few months, Newcastle will be left with a mountain to climb in the second half of the season. That’s something the new owners cannot afford in their first year at the club.
