Have these three players been the real reason behind Chelsea's title charge?
Chelsea are currently top of the league, six points clear of second placed Liverpool. The Blues have won 12 games in a row, a new club record. If they beat Stoke and Tottenham they will equal Arsenal’s record of 14 wins which is the longest winning run in Premier League history.
As manager Antonio Conte said, “To win 12 games in a row is not easy in this league. It’s a fantastic run but it’s important to continue that now.” Chelsea’s team is overflowing with confidence and they have looked unstoppable in the majority of games played this season. Here are three players who have had a huge part to play in Chelsea’s incredible run of form.
A top class goalkeeper is just as important as a top class striker when you are challenging for the title and Chelsea have that in Thibaut Courtois. The 24-year-old has kept 11 clean sheets so far this season, more than any other goalkeeper. He already has more clean sheets than he managed last season (5) and if Chelsea keep performing as they are he should get many more.
There are large periods of the game when Courtois has nothing to do but he never switches off. He is always alert and aware of the danger that the opposition possesses. A key example of this is Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Sunderland. In injury time, Courtois produced a fantastic save to deny Patrick van Aanholt and ensure Chelsea took all three points.
Courtois has been just as important as the outfield players in this resilient and determined Chelsea side.
