Have Newcastle found their new Fabricio Coloccini in Federico Fernandez?

Federico Fernandez is showing all the early indications of becoming a hero at Newcastle United.

Newcastle snapped Fernandez up from relegated Swansea City in the summer and it would be an understatement to suggest that the Geordies did not quite expect him to be so good.

Fernandez has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet with some dominant, solid and passionate displays at the heart of defence.

And the 32-cap Argentina international has all the ingredients to follow fellow countryman and centre-back Fabricio Coloccini into the Newcastle hall of fame.

With 275 appearances for the Magpies, he is well and truly considered a hero in the North East.

Fernandez has a long way to go before he matches Coloccini’s appearance count or his popularity in Newcastle.

But the early signs are that he is just the type of defender who can inspire Newcastle to climb up the league table.

The 29-year-old has featured in 11 games for Newcastle this season and is a rock at the back.

Fernandez’s experience at Swansea, coupled with him reuniting with ex-Napoli boss Rafa Benitez, makes him a very useful player in Newcastle’s Premier League campaign.
