Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer, but the Yorkshire club may have just received a boost in their bid to keep the Thorp Arch academy product.
The Telegraph reported earlier this month that Villa were preparing a £14million offer for Phillips, who starred for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last season and earned a place in the Championship team of the year.
Villa have offloaded both Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan on free transfers this summer, after their contracts expired despite helping the club gain promotion. They join Alan Hutton, Albert Adomah and more in leaving the club.
A new, holding midfielder is required at Villa Park and Phillips was supposedly that man. However, on Wednesday Villa were linked with a new number four – and that may come as a big boost to Leeds.
Zimbabwean outlet The Chronicle have claimed that Aston Villa are preparing a £20million offer to sign Marvelous Nakamba, who currently plies his trade for Belgian giants Club Brugge.
The report claims Villa are in pole position to sign the 12-time Zimbabwe international, who has impressed for Club Brugge in recent months. However, Villa are not alone in their pursuit of the hard-working midfielder.
Indeed, Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Watford are also keen on Nakamba, who is renowned for his lung-busting stamina and boasts an intricate array of passing. He has a contract until the summer of 2021.
Italian side Atalanta are also keen but the fact Villa are in pole position, suggests they are desperately working hard to bring the African midfielder to the Midlands. That, in turn, provides Leeds with a big boost in their bid to keep Phillips.
If Villa sign Nakamba, they will no longer need a holding midfielder, thus reducing the need for Leeds star Phillips.
