'At the end of the day': Hasselbaink slams Arsenal player who everyone else seems to be loving right now

Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink didn’t hold back in his criticism of Gabriel Jesus as Arsenal lost to Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday.

Despite playing well for much of the game, Jesus failed to get on the scoresheet as Arsenal lost their unbeaten record thanks to a second half double from Marcus Rashford. So far, Jesus has been winning loads of plaudits since signing and Gary Neville even had him as his man of the match for 65 minutes yesterday.

However, Hasselbaink was having none of it and believes Jesus came to Arsenal to score goals, something he isn’t looking like doing a lot of right now.

“He’s a number nine. If I’m a number nine I want wide players to create. Here and there yes, I can give you a ball and I can set you up. But at the end of the day, he’s come to Arsenal to score goals,” Hasselbaink said on Sky Sports.

“He should play deeper. Yes he can drop into the midfield at times but he needs to get chances, he needs to arrive in the box. Who is going to get the chances? Martinelli? Martinelli wasn’t in the game after his first little spell in the first 20 minutes.”

TBR’s View: Hasselbaink Goes Against Consensus

Maybe it was his impending resignation at Burton playing on his mind a bit but Hasselbaink was in no mood to mince his words on this. Gabriel Jesus might have impressed Rio Ferdinand but Hasselbaink is all about goals and he doesn’t like his strikers not to be scoring.

The former Chelsea man does have a bit of a point here. Jesus is meant to be the main number nine and getting chances but despite all his good play, he didn’t look like scoring.

Jesus will need to score goals, otherwise Arsenal are back to square one, despite his brilliance in and around the box.
