Southampton’s Premier League campaign has gotten off to a difficult start. The Saints were beaten 3-0 by Burnley on the opening weekend. They then lost 2-1 against Liverpool at St Mary’s Stadium.
However, the south coast club were much improved against the Reds. They competed well against Jurgen Klopp’s side and almost stole a late point but Danny Ings failed to convert his chance to score a second.
Ralph Hasenhuttl will be keen to see his side get some points on the board this weekend when they take on Brighton. He certainly wants to see his team taking their chances and showing more defensive solidity. As quoted by the club’s official website, the Austrian coach said, “the atmosphere is focused, and they try to work hard, but finally we must show on the weekend that we are concentrated enough to have maybe a clean sheet and work 90 minutes to get a good result”.
Hasenhuttl is right to demand more concentration from his defenders. They have conceded five goals in two games so far this season, and a few of them were preventable. If the Saints are to avoid another relegation scrap this season they will need to quickly become more solid at the back.
They also need to take their chances. At times they have struggled to create opportunities, so the likes of Ings, Che Adams and Nathan Redmond must take the ones they do get.
