Hasan Salihamidzic praised 'really good' Leeds signing Marc Roca
Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has praised Marc Roca in an interview with The Times as he opened up on the decision to sell the midfielder to Leeds United in the summer.
Roca has taken little time to make himself a fan favourite at Elland Road. Only two players in the Premier League have made a greater number of progressive passes so far this season.
Whites fans may have had concerns when they signed Roca. Leeds paid just £10 million for the Spaniard. And they have not always had the best luck when signing players from some of Europe’s biggest heavyweights.
But the deal for Roca is threatening to prove incredibly inspired. That may not come as a huge surprise to Salihamidzic.
The Bosnian opened up on how Bayern sold several players to raise funds this summer. And as he gave the explanation, he praised the quality Roca does have.
“Our income was down €120 million [about £105 million] because of an empty Allianz Arena, and you can’t spend money you don’t have, we won’t take such risks,” he told The Times.
“We tried to get in players who didn’t pose a financial risk but made it possible to generate sales afterwards that allowed us to get some top players in. A player like Marc Roca might not have quite made it but he’s nevertheless a really good player, an interesting player, who’s a starter for Leeds United [now].”
Salihamidzic praised Marc Roca
Salihamidzic’s description of Roca will probably ring true for a lot of Bayern fans. The 25-year-old was involved in a lot of squads during his two years in Bavaria. However, he only managed to make 15 Bundesliga appearances in two years.
Nevertheless, Julian Nagelsmann was a fan of the midfielder.
Obviously, it is not nice to hear Salihamidzic’s assessment of Roca’s prospects at the Allianz Arena. But Leeds probably would not have stood a chance of doing a deal if he was featuring a lot more.
It does indeed appear that the move has worked out brilliantly for all parties. Leeds fans will hope that he can now continue to maintain his high standards after a superb start to life at Elland Road.
