Vurnon Anita is expected to leave Leeds United at the end of the season after becoming another one of Victor Orta’s failed signings at Elland Road – and he may have just taken a step closer to the exit door, through Instagram.
The 29-year-old joined the Whites on a free transfer from Newcastle United in the summer of 2017. He was seen as somewhat of a coup, given that he had played an important part in The Toon’s promotion to the Premier League.
But he struggled under Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom. He managed just 22 appearances for Leeds, and was deemed surplus to requirements by Marcelo Bielsa this time around.
He was offloaded to Dutch Eredivisie side Willem II. He has since impressed, reverting to his natural position of holding midfield, clocking up 26 appearances in all competitions this season.
Now, the Netherlands international may have just hinted to Leeds fans that a permanent exit is on the cards. He posted a photo, after being named captain of Willem II.
With the temptation of the armband at Willem II, Anita will feel valued in the Dutch side. Despite having a contract until the summer of 2020, the likelihood is that he may look to secure a permanent Willem II move.
Leeds are likely to let Anita go for a nominal fee, given that they signed him for nothing from Newcastle and that he only has 12 months remaining on his current contract.
Anita is clearly enjoying life in his home country, and being named captain has delighted the versatile star. Perhaps, that post suggests he has taken a step towards the exit door.
