A number of Aston Villa fans have called on Dean Smith to start Keinan Davis in their upcoming Premier League game following his cameo in Monday night’s embarrassing loss.
Villa headed to Leicester City hoping to get their relegation battle back on track but instead they were torn to pieces in a 4-0 defeat, with Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy both scoring braces.
The Villans may well have fancied their chances beforehand, given Leicester had not won in the league since 22 January, and Vardy had not scored in nearly 11 hours.
However, Pepe Reina effectively gifted Barnes a goal with his baffling charge towards the Leicester man 25 yards out, which resulted in the keeper being rounded and the ball fired home from the edge of the box.
Vardy then scored a penalty in the 63rd minute, not long after coming on, before getting on the scoresheet in the 79th minute with a neat finish at the near post, and Barnes made it four after meeting Marc Albrighton’s cross.
Davis came on in the 67th minute and looked a threat for his side, albeit coming on too late to make a significant impact, and several fans thought he should be given a go from the off against Chelsea on Saturday.
Here is what some Villa supporters said on social media:
Davis has to start the final ten games. We offer no attacking threat with one up front. #avfc

Keinan Davis has shown more fight in the last 20 than the rest all game #avfc

Absolutely awful tonight; grealish non existent, defence woeful, samatta can’t do anything with no service. Davis was ok when he came on. Mings can wave goodbye to the euros and we can wave goodbye to the premier league. #avfc

Need to play Davis and Samatta up top in a 5-3-2. Get Grealish back central. Also hate this director of football style of signing players. Let the manager buy what he thinks he can work with. No lessons learnt from 2015/16. I don’t think I’ve seen so many individual errors #avfc

I can’t score anyone of them above 3, barring Davis and El Ghazi

PSA. Start Keenan Davis #AVFC

I would like to see us start to play 2 up front in our remaining home games at least!, Davis up with samatta would work.
Using 1 striker isolated all the time just isn’t good enough
We need goals, we need points, have to give it a go. #AVFC

Reina was clueless last night, so to many others. Get down Villa Park on Saturday & back Smith and the boys. It’s still possible. I think it’s time to rip up the manual, go rogue, play Davis and Samatta, pump it up and press Chelsea high. Get McGinn back in there & let’s see!

Davis, who came through the ranks at Villa, was praised by Smith following his performance in the 6-1 League Cup win over Crewe last August, telling the Birmingham Mail: “He was very good. He’s a handful Keinan, I don’t think there will be too many centre-halves in any league that would want to play against him. He’s physical, he’s strong.
“I was really pleased he got his goal because that’s the only thing missing at times. He’s a bit of a throwback of a centre-forward, a bit like a Cyrille Regis from them days, God bless him. His performance was excellent, he made the ball stick around him and brought others into play and got one himself.”
