Has He Lived Up to Expectations at Arsenal?

The Arsenal forward has never truly lived up to that original hype. It was clear Walcott was meant for great things, but like that first season, so much of his career has been painstakingly frustrating. Injured so often and not being given enough time to build up steam, there is clear talent in Walcott, but for a number of reasons it just hasn’t quite worked out.

  • Unfortunately for Walcott, he has never been in the team long enough, or stayed injury free, for a prolonged period of time – the England man has missed 40% of Arsenal’s games since he first arrived on the scene.
  • Alan Hansen famously once said that Walcott had ‘no footballing brain’ – (although he did say it was his biggest regret).
  • There is also the debate about where he should play – centrally, cutting in from the left, or stuck out on the right?

So far, Theo Walcott has an FA Cup winners medal in his cabinet after scoring in the final, and you can add an FA Community Shield winners medal to show for his time at Arsenal. Nevertheless, this season will undoubtedly be his biggest for the club.

  • After a slow start he is beginning to form a devastating partnership with Olivier Giroud as he is given more opportunity at centre forward. With the Premier League being so unpredictable, Arsenal surely have their best chance of a Premier League title for over a decade.
  • He has also helped Arsenal maintain their place in the Premier League’s top four finishing third on four occasions. As well as getting Arsenal out of the group stages of the Champions League since his move from the Saints.
  • He does have his fans: former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola said, ‘you would need a pistol to stop him’.
