Paul Merson has praised Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and midfielder Miguel Almiron.

In his Daily Star column, Merson said that Howe has been supremely impressive since the takeover and he has guided Newcastle into the European race.

He has also transformed Almiron, who scored the winner against Everton in midweek and is seemingly in the form of his life.

Merson on Howe and Almiron

Merson wrote: “Eddie Howe has got something about him.

“He let me come into one of his team meetings down at Bournemouth a few years ago and I was so impressed with the message he got across to his players.

“Miguel Almiron has been brilliant this season and that’s where you see good, good managers.

“When they improve players. Who knows what can happen? It’s a season like no other.”

Next up for Newcastle, Almiron and Howe is a game against Tottenham, who are coming off a defeat against Manchester United.

Antonio Conte’s side have done a good job of grinding down teams at home this season but Newcastle have now kept two consecutive clean sheets.

A result in north London would be another marker that Newcastle are in the European race and Howe will be hoping Almiron can keep his goalscoring form going.
