Jetro Willems’ injury came at the worst possible time, as the Newcastle United loanee was just beginning to show he was deserving of a permanent move to St. James’ Park – but has he dropped another hint that he could join permanently after all?
Willems, 25, joined Newcastle in the summer on a loan-to-buy deal from German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. He clocked up 20 appearances for The Toon, having a hand in five goals – scoring twice and creating three more.
The Netherlands international found the back of the net in a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool and a 2-2 draw with Manchester City. But against Chelsea back in January, Willems was stretchered off with a knee injury – and will miss the rest of the campaign.
His activity on social media, as well as his excellent performances on the left side of the defence which has finally solved Newcastle’s left-back search, made him a favourite among Toon supporters during his 20 games.
The overriding support of Newcastle supporters is that they are desperate to keep the former PSV Eindhoven ace, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The Toon have announced contracts for Matt Ritchie, Jonjo Shelvey and Federico Fernandez.
The Chronicle claim Willems has a permanent clause worth £10million, and the Dutch defender has seemingly dropped another hint that that clause has been activated – with a birthday message to Allan Saint-Maximin.
In the message, Willems tells Saint-Maximin: “Can’t wait to bring that danger on the left with you again.”
