Jan Vertonghen’s future at Tottenham Hotspur looks as though it is about to come to an end as Spurs complete their 2019-20 campaign on Sunday – and his latest Twitter activity has hinted at an inevitable exit.
Vertonghen, 33, is out of contract at the end of the season and although many Spurs fans are keen to see the Belgian remain at their club – it looks more than likely that he is about to leave in the coming days.
Since joining the club eight years ago for a fee of £9.5million (Guardian), Vertonghen has clocked up a total of 315 appearances for Tottenham. But this season, he has played just 30 times – completing 90 minutes just 21 times.
Vertonghen has been linked with a return to Ajax while numerous Italian clubs are supposedly interested. The Telegraph have even claimed last week that Manchester City were interested in signing the soon-to-be free agent.
On the pitch, Spurs need to secure three points against a struggling Crystal Palace side and hope that Wolves fail to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in order to gain a place in next season’s Europa League by finishing sixth.
Vertonghen looks as though he is unlikely to be a part of that, though. A fan posted a touching tribute to the Belgian defender and Vertonghen liked the post, suggesting that he is due to leave Spurs.
We probably know he isn’t signing a new contract but he signed for us 8 seasons ago. Hes gone on to serve this club for 8 years putting in consistent performances every season. He did not win any trophies but in my eyes , he is a Tottenham legend and one of us. ?@JanVertonghen pic.twitter.com/ggar6wyNsI
