Newcastle United fringe man Fabian Schar impressed off the bench against Watford at the weekend and may have left manager Rafael Benitez with a major selection headache moving forward.
The Magpies recorded their first Premier League win of the season on Saturday, as they edged out Watford 1-0 at St James’ Park courtesy of an Ayoze Perez strike in the second-half.
Benitez’s side had to defend resiliently throughout, with the usual centre-back pairing of Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez starting the game in defence.
But captain Lascelles came off at half-time due to a shoulder injury and that opened the door for Schar to come in.
Schar slotted in brilliantly alongside Fernandez and it was just his third first-team appearance of the season.
The 26-year-old defender looked composed on the ball and most importantly made some excellent blocks when Newcastle’s backs were against the wall at home to Watford.
He is a centre-back that arrived at St James’ Park with a decent reputation, but the Switzerland international has had to be patient for his opportunities.
Schar must surely be in the thinking of Benitez after impressing in the league and it could leave him with an extremely difficult decision when it comes to selecting his team.
