Alfie Whiteman has joined Swedish side Degerfors IF on loan for the entire 2021-22 season – despite Tottenham cashing in on goalkeeper Joe Hart. Whiteman leaves after making his Tottenham debut last season – but while the move is temporary, is it a sign he has played his last game for Spurs?
Whiteman, 22, has spent the last few seasons at Tottenham fourth-choice goalkeeper. An England Under-19 international, Whiteman spent the majority of Mauricio Pochettino and then Jose Mourinho’s reign behind Hugo Lloris, Michel Vorm and Paulo Gazzaniga.
Last season, he remained fourth choice with Gazzaniga and Lloris joined by Joe Hart. But this season, he had the chance to be third-choice and potentially get game time in the Conference League. That is because both Hart and Gazzaniga left, joined only by Pierluigi Gollini.

So, is Whiteman likely to have played his last game for Tottenham?
It looks that way. Whiteman has joined a club that have just been promoted to the top tier of Swedish football – but even if he impresses at that standard, it is some way off Premier League or even Championship football. By the time his loan ends, he will find he is out of contract at Tottenham.
The one saving grace Whiteman has is that he is both homegrown, and has trained at Tottenham for three years between the ages of 16 and 21. He is ideal for the homegrown quota. The loan, as things stand, means Whiteman probably has played his last game for Spurs – but it could change.
