Harvey White praises Bryan Gil after Spurs' mid-season friendlies

Harvey White has told Tottenham Hotspur’s official website that it has been great to play alongside Bryan Gil and Dejan Kulusevski after getting a chance up front in the club’s mid-season friendlies.

Spurs have one of the squads which have been greatly impacted by the World Cup. In fact, Cristian Romero and Hugo Lloris are still away and set to face off in the final this weekend.

That has presented an opportunity to a number of fringe players with Antonio Conte’s side facing Motherwell and Peterborough United. And White is one of those who has been involved.

In fact, the young midfielder has been used up front in both of the games. And with that, he has played alongside another youngster who has struggled for opportunities this season.

Gil has made just one league appearance this term. He has only featured for a handful of minutes so far.

It would be no surprise to see the Spaniard leave in some capacity in January. But White has praised the 21-year-old after playing alongside him in the two friendlies.

“It’s good to get minutes in the tank and nice to get on the scoresheet. It doesn’t happen that often! But when I got the chance, I wanted to be as clinical as possible,” he told Tottenham’s official website.

“It’s a different role, but in many ways it’s like playing as a holding midfielder, my usual position. The passing patterns are similar, one-two touch, everything I’m used to, and then playing with Deki and Bryan, that’s been great, we’re all on the same wavelength.”

Spurs are seriously depleted right now. The likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Richarlison have been away at the World Cup. With that, Gil’s performances in the two games probably do little for his chances ahead of the second-half of the season.

It is a shame that he has not had more opportunities. But it simply appears that he is not suited to Antonio Conte’s system.

He returned in the summer off the back of an impressive spell with Valencia. But that did little to improve his standing within the Spurs squad.

He had an opportunity while so many of the key players were away. However, he will know that it may be another frustrating few months if he stays beyond January.
