Former Celtic star makes surprise Gerrard claim, amid Aston Villa reports

Former Celtic star John Hartson has told the Go Radio Football Show that Steven Gerrard won’t be leaving Rangers to join Aston Villa.

It’s a remarkable comment considering Gerrard looks to be nearing a move to Villa Park and was even spotted getting off a train in London earlier today.

The Gers boss had his suit in his hand and looked to be heading for talks with the owners of Villa, amid reports.

Gerrard has been with Rangers since the 2018/19 campaign and last season he finally wrestled the league title from Celtic.

Now, with the Light Blues sitting top of the Scottish Premiership once more, he looks set to leave Ibrox.

Hartson doesn’t think the Rangers boss is going anywhere though.

He told the Go Radio Football Show: “Steven Gerrard’s not going anywhere. I think he’s committed, he’s got a bit of loyalty about him; he’s a man of integrity and morals and I think he’ll stay at Rangers and retain the title.

“I don’t think the fans would accept it now but if he was to retain the title and then leave there would be an acceptance from the fans.

“He batted the Newcastle job away and I think he’ll do the same with Aston Villa. He won’t go anywhere right now.”

These comments are quite remarkable really. Although Hartson makes some strong points, it doesn’t look as though Gerrard will share his sentiments.

Reports suggest that a deal for Gerrard to go to the Premier League is close and an announcement could happen in the next couple of days.

Of course, football is a funny old game but it doesn’t seem as though Gerrard will be having any second thoughts here.

Rangers fans surely won’t hold his departure against him.

He managed to stop Celtic from winning 10 league titles in a row and would leave the club in a healthy state.

Aston Villa is a massive club and would represent a quality first foray into Premier League management for Gerrard.
