Report: Harry Winks considering ankle surgery after nightmare Tottenham loan spell

Tottenham midfielder, Harry Winks, could be set for surgery and a lengthy spell on the side lines to compound a miserable 2022.

Winks was cast aside by Antonio Conte in the summer. The 26-year-old midfielder wasn’t fancied by the Italian, who duly allowed Winks to join Serie A side Sampdoria on loan.

However, thinks have gone from bad to worse for Winks over in Italy. He has yet to appear for Sampdoria and now, according to Football Italia, he could be set for surgery. It’s claimed Winks is considering going under the knife to try and rectify an ankle problem. If he does go for that option, then he’s set to miss between three and four months of action.

It would compound what has been an utterly miserable 2022 for Winks on the pitch. He was hoping his move to Sampdoria would bring first-team football and a new lease of life. Players like Tammy Abraham and Chris Smalling have enjoyed similar upticks in performance since moving to Serie A.

However, it looks like Winks is going to end his time in Italy with a whimper. Should he undergo surgery, it’s claimed Sampdoria want him back with Spurs. The Londoners, meanwhile, would prefer Winks remained in Italy.

TBR’s View: Winks threatening to be a wasted career

It looked so promising for Harry Winks at one point. Mauricio Pochettino liked him, as did Jose Mourinho. But now, he looks like he’s on the path to a complete rebuild.

If it does mean having surgery, then Winks – dubbed amazing by Pochettino – might be better just going for it now. He’s not achieving anything sat over in Italy on the touchline so it might help.

You do feel a move back to England at some point might help. And if he can get over the injury and prove himself fit, then there’ll be clubs who want to take him.
