Harry Winks is one Tottenham player who could do with producing a masterclass performance this evening as Spurs take on Antwerp.
The England midfielder has fallen down the pecking order somewhat under Jose Mourinho and talks have started to rumble in the media that Winks – who earns a reported £50k-a-week – could seek a move away from Spurs in January or the summer.
Although Football.London claims a decision is likely to be made at the end of the season, you get the impression that Winks needs to make the most of his moments in the first-team.
Expected to start tonight, the midfielder will need to showcase his talent and show Mourinho what he has to offer. Indeed, he has done so before and Mourinho, as we saw on the Amazon documentary, was impressed with Winks initially.
Not his fault?
Of course, Winks’ lack of minutes is not simply down to just him not necessarily doing the business. The signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been a game-changer for Spurs. As has the resurgence of Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele.
Naturally, this has pushed Winks down the pecking order.
But the England man does have plenty to offer. In fact, it was only in the summer when Jamie Redknapp called Winks the ‘glue’ in the Spurs midfield. So, surely, this is a midfield player who can impress Mourinho?
A game against Antwerp is the perfect chance for Winks to do so. He should see plenty of the ball, which is what he needs. Of course, Hojbjerg is Mourinho’s man of the moment, but Harry Winks can still play an important role for this Spurs team.
