Harry Winks apologises after nightmare start to Sampdoria loan spell
Harry Winks has issued an apology to former Sampdoria boss Marco Giampaolo, telling Il Secolo XIX that he remains desperate to play for the Serie A side following his loan move from Tottenham Hotspur.
Winks has endured a nightmare spell since moving to Italy in the summer. He left Spurs looking to become the next English player to relaunch his career in Serie A.
However, the 26-year-old goes into the January transfer window still awaiting his competitive debut for I Blucerchiati. He has been out with injury throughout his time on loan.

In that time, Sampdoria have sacked Giampaolo and replaced him with Dejan Stankovic.
The January window opens the door for Tottenham’s loanees to consider their immediate futures and perhaps take on a different challenge. And some may have been wondering whether Winks would be one looking for a change of scene after a tough time in Italy.
However, Winks has now insisted that he wants to stay put. He also expressed his disappointment for the boss who brought him to the club.
“I absolutely want to play for Sampdoria. The last four months have been very complicated, for the team and for me too. So much bad luck. I’m working hard to get back. And I trust that in the next five months of the championship we will be able to do well,” he told Il Secolo XIX (via Tuttomercatoweb).
“I can only apologise to Giampaolo, he welcomed me very well and I was not able to repay his trust.”
It is a massive few months ahead for Winks. It is hard to see him getting back into the fold at Tottenham when you consider the amount of depth Antonio Conte has in the middle of the park.
But an impressive loan spell in Italy may increase the likelihood of Winks earning a good move elsewhere. He clearly has the talent to make an impact at the highest level.
Unfortunately, he is off to a really disappointing start at Sampdoria. But he is absolutely determined to prove a point once he is back playing.
