Harry Redknapp has told Sky Sports News (Wednesday 12.45pm) that he believes the signing of Philippe Coutinho could push Tottenham Hotspur alongside Liverpool and Manchester City as Premier League title contenders.

Sky Sports claim Tottenham are in pole position to land the 27-year-old from Barcelona, amid links with a return to Liverpool and indeed Manchester United. It is believed Barcelona are willing to let Coutinho leave on loan.

Coutinho struggled at Barcelona last season, managing just 11 goals and five assists in 55 league and cup appearances for Ernesto Valverde’s side. Joining Barca in January 2018, Coutinho had scored 10 goals in just 21 games.

With the signing of Antoine Griezmann, Coutinho has been pushed down the pecking order and former Spurs manager Redknapp reckons if Spurs can land Coutinho, they will become title contenders.

“If they could get Coutinho, they could go on and challenge for the Premier League title,” Redknapp said. “He would be a good fit for anybody. He’s probably gone to Barcelona and not found it easy, with Lionel Messi there.
“He’s [Messi] the icing on the cake, Coutinho is in the shadow. He would be a great player for Spurs, there’s no doubt about that.”

TBR’s view – Redknapp is spot on, if Coutinho joins Tottenham

Coutinho would be a superb addition at Tottenham, and his Premier League stats are proof. In 152 appearances for Liverpool in England’s top tier, the 55-time Brazil international had a hand in 78 goals.

Scoring 41 times and creating 37 more, Coutinho is involved in one goal in less than every two matches. That kind os attacking pedigree would see Spurs become much more lethal in the final third.
