Harry Redknapp says Man United made an absolutely ‘crazy’ signing last summer

Harry Redknapp believes Manchester United paid ‘crazy’ money to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta over the summer.

Rasmus Hojlund has endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford after joining for a fee worth around £64 million back in August.

The 20-year-old has netted just one goal in the Premier League this term, managing his first in his 15th league game for Man United against Aston Villa last month.

The Danish striker has shown promise though, particularly during United’s Champions League campaign where he netted five times in six games.

But he’s received plenty of criticism due to his form in the league, with Tony Cascarino labelling him a ‘Championship level’ striker last month.

And Harry Redknapp has now delivered his verdict on the signing, claiming United have paid above and beyond for a striker who’s yet to reach his full potential.

Redknapp says United paid ‘crazy’ money to sign Hojlund

Speaking on talkSPORT, Redknapp discussed Timo Werner’s move to Tottenham yesterday and mentioned Hojlund.

He said: “Why do they [RB Leipzig] want to loan him [Werner] out really? Why would they loan him out if he’s doing that great? Obviously, they can’t be too mad about him.

“But as I say, when you’re short… it’s a gamble, Ally. You know better than anyone else with strikers.

“You look last night at United, the lad they’ve bought [Hojlund]. What was he, 80 or 90 million pounds? I don’t know how much. Crazy money and he’s still miles away from being the finished article.

“What do you get for your money now? It’s a gamble. You’re paying £70 million or £80 million. Chelsea buy players who don’t know the game yet. It’s frightening.”

It’s fair to say that United paid a huge fee for Hojlund based on his potential, rather than his current capabilities.

Hojlund’s difficult start to life in Manchester hasn’t been helped by the fact that Erik ten Hag’s side have underachieved so far this term.

The Dane would have probably benefitted from United bringing in a more experienced option up front to take some of the pressure off his shoulders.
