Harry Redknapp has told the Daily Record that Jermain Defoe is capable of scoring 40 goals for Rangers during the 2019/20 campaign.
The former football manager was in charge of the Gers star during spells at Portsmouth and Tottenham. He is well aware of the qualities he possesses and has backed the 36-year-old for a big season.
Defoe joined Rangers in January on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth. The Gers could offload Alfredo Morelos during the summer and that might see the veteran talisman take on the mantle of scoring goals.
Redknapp told the Daily Record: “Jermain looks after himself so well. He lives right, he’s not a drinker, he’s totally dedicated. Can he get 40 goals? Yes, of course. Without a doubt. He will always score goals, he’s an amazing finisher. Given the chance, he can stick them away and I’d expect him to do that next season.”
Defoe has seven goals and eight assists during his short spell with Rangers so far and he has really stepped up in the absence of Morelos through suspension.
Redknapp is correct when he says Defoe is an amazing finisher but to suggest he can get 40 goals is somewhat ambitious.
Of course, the Rangers man is still capable of scoring goals but to suggest hitting the 40-mark is somewhat disrespectful to the Scottish Premiership.
Morelos is a fantastic talisman and he only has 29 this season, although that could have been more minus several missed games through suspension.
Defoe should be capable of hitting 25 goals in Scotland but given his age, he will probably not feature in every game. Redknapp’s comments smack of him being overly loyal to a player who he clearly holds in high regard.
