Harry Redknapp has told BBC Radio 5 Live that Tottenham Hotspur need three or four new players this summer to improve on this season’s poor campaign – and has urged Daniel Levy to back Jose Mourinho in the coming months.

Spurs nabbed all three points on Monday evening with a 1-0 win over Everton, allowing Mourinho’s men to climb into eighth place. With five league games to play, Spurs are a point behind Arsenal and four behind Wolves.

While European football remains a possibility, Spurs have still struggled this season despite reaching the Champions League final last season. A lack of spending has seen heavy criticism aimed at chairman Levy.

Tottenham icon Redknapp has urged Levy to back Mourinho in the upcoming summer window, and thinks Spurs need three or four new players to return to the kind of Tottenham side that shone under Mauricio Pochettino.

“Jose can’t just walk into Tottenham, he’s got no magic wand,” Redknapp said. “He needs some new players, three or four players because the team is nowhere near as it was a couple of years ago. He needs some new players or he is going to find next year equally as hard.”

TBR’s view – Can Spurs return to top four next season?

If they are to do that, they need a new right-back – first and foremost. Serge Aurier is a liability, and the perfect right-back signing in Thomas Meunier has just joined Borussia Dortmund. Spurs need a right-sided defender.

They could also do with a left-back. A player like Mousa Dembele in central midfield,  which Tanguy Ndombele was supposed to be, would also be a good signing. A replacement for Harry Kane when he is unfit is also crucial.

Some problem areas that need solving for Spurs, then. But perhaps most importantly, is a big marquee signing to get fans back onside. Paulo Dybala, perhaps?
