‘Harry Kane is the league’s best finisher’ – Three things learnt from Hull City 1-7 Tottenham Hotspur

Hull can thrive again in the Championship

Regardless of their relegation and the embarrassing defeat to Spurs, Hull City fans can be proud of their side’s efforts overall this season. Before even kicking a ball they had been written off by everyone. They had no manager and were favourites for the drop yet they started well and showed signs of revival under Marco Silva.

It looks likely that Silva will leave the club, despite the wishes of fans and those in charge. His departure will understandably feel like a blow if/when it comes, but there is no reason why it should significantly hinder the club. His work this season, particularly in improving the side’s home form, has been impressive, but his experience lies at bigger clubs and in top leagues, another manager with experience of the Championship, similar to Steve Bruce who brought them promotion, may well work again.

Whilst losing 7-1 the majority of Hull’s support stayed and sang. Now that arguments over a potential name change are in the past, the club is actually well run and will be in a good position both financially and with regards to their fan base, to have yet another tilt at promotion.

Taking positives from such a defeat can be difficult, yet the heavily rotated squad showed signs of encouragement. Tymon and Bowen are both young but worked tirelessly for their side and showed flashes of their ability alongside a core of long-serving players which the club should be able to keep hold of.

The combination of bringing through exciting young talents, keeping the experienced core who have bounced back in the past, and the ability to spend money if required, should leave Hull in a position to challenge within the Championship – that looks set to be weaker and more open than this year.
